My first attempt at carving deadwood.

Young Mountain Beech gets a haircut.

This little Mountain Beech was dug up about a year ago. It grows very long, unsightly and awkward to place shoots. These photos show the tree before styling and some after styling. The idea at this stage is to get the foliage pads to thicken and to get more growth towards the back.

These Black Beeches have recently been harvested on a local farm. They will stay in these containers for a long time before the styling can begin. The one in the yellow crate is probably a waste of time, but the optimist in me planted it. The second and third black crates from the left are boxthorns.

While I am at it, why not get a Pine going. This one was a challenge as there were many branches all over the place. This is probaly a five year project. It will go into the ground or a large timber box in spring with the hope of lots of back budding and branch development.

Another Juniper. I am on a roll today.

Cold, miserable day outside. Retreat into the studio and create something. This Juniper (before) is a nursery stock plant. Fine wiring still needs to be done, but the plant will now rest until summer. This Juniper has a lot more depth (cannot be seen on the after photo) as I am now conentrating on this aspect of development for my trees. See the earlier post about 3D trees.

Cascade Juniper

Here is a before and after of a Juniper procumbens nana. This tree has had a rough time for some time and deserves a bit of pampering. There is a lot of dead foliage that had to be removed. The idea is now to feed it and allow to grow for the pads to show some substance. There are some deadwood that will be jinned later in the year. The live vein is healthy and the hope is that the tree will react so some love and care.
